First impressions for this laptop are really good! I've only had it for a month and a half so I'll be adding some updates to my review but I wanted to say a little something about it right off the bat! Visually it is stunning with all of the LED theme options and the smooth black surface inside, plus the nice sleek silver outside. Performance wise it blows me away, of course I'm kinda biased since the last laptop I had ran Windows XP, but WOW! I've played multiple games on this monster already, including Divinity: Original Sin co-op with my boyfriend, which loads really fast and they all play great on high settings. Surfing the net is a breeze and connecting external devices for videos and pictures, etc. is smooth and fast as well. Audio is amazing for a laptop, it's actually almost comparable to our 42" Samsung smart TV. Although it is pretty heavy and I won't be traveling very much with it I did still get a good case for it for when I do take it places and it's really not that heavy when using a shoulder strap, even with the ac adapter and my mouse.

I've been debating getting an Alienware laptop off and on for 2 years - I don't NEED one, but it would be nice to have and I finally made the plunge when I saw I could get this one at almost half off retail value. I'm very glad I did. I'm not a huge gamer but I do have several PC games and a couple that my cheap desktop pc can't handle well and this laptop is like Hercules in terms of power - no problems at all playing anything I throw at it. It's also not that heavy, if you ask me. I read reviews that it's quite a bit to lug around but to me it's really not very heavy at all. But then, my last Dell laptop years ago was also 17 inches and big so maybe I'm just used to it. It's definitely not a Mac Airbook but it's not like carrying a sack of bricks, either. One feature I love is that there are air vents around the back side and not just on the bottom so it doesn't overheat like my last laptop did, although I still use a cooling pad underneath.

I bought a refurbished one and the one thing I wish they would have left alone was Windows 7. It was refurbished to Windows 8.1, which I don't think is as terrible as reviews have made it seem but it takes getting used to. I find it kind of strange that the desktop is an "app" instead of just the default screen when you power on and you have to hit the windows logo + X to see options that normally pop up when you press the start button or the logo in the bottom left corner of other Windows systems. But this is a minor issue. I prefer Windows 7 but with a little patience and enough time to explore, Windows 8 is easy enough to learn and get used to.

Overall, it's worth the purchase. I can finally play games that lagged on my desktop and I can play them on something portable so I'm not confined to one room. It feels sturdy and well-built and it looks beautiful as well.

This is a bad boy, you're getting a $3500 or so laptop for at least a thousand less than the Alienware website, I have owned Alienware laptops for the last 5 years, the last one I purchased was 5 years ago and it still is better than probably 50 percent of the newest laptops out there right now, never a blue screen of death, Windows 7 is stable as a brick Bbq pit, can't stand windows 8, freekin sucks on laptops, I bought this new laptop here on Amazon about a month ago, am turning into a business photography editing machine, for my photography business, loaded it with the latest photography software, it is lightening fast, need a fast laptop to show customers my work, You can't have lag between pictures, it is not professional, I need to be able to edit on the fly, and have albums ready, this Alienware 17 inch helps me go to my meetings with confidence that my laptop is not going to fail me, highly recommend !!!!

Late review, but I bought this model back in 2014. The laptop is great, well-built, and having an optic drive was something I wanted since some older games require a disc to play. It was able to handle multiboxing five World of Warcraft accounts at the same time with a monitor connected for a second display and the fans worked well.

Unfortunately, I accidentally dropped it (forgot to close my laptop messenger bag when walking so it fell out) shortly after the warranty had ended. The only damage (that I know for sure) is the GPU fan not turning on, so I can't game on it due to the temperatures getting too high. Since I ended up building a desktop, the laptop had been sitting in a bag, not in use. A replacement fan from ebay didn't fix it, so I'm not sure if the motherboard needs replacing. It is still working fine today, but the whole point of buying it was for gaming while at work (lol). I did finally get around to taking it to a computer repair shop last month, but they were unable to pinpoint the problem and the GPU fan somehow turned on when the employee was testing the graphics with their own program. Later that day from home, the GPU fan did not turn on for me. Depending on the parts that would need replacing, it may not be worth it to do it.

My advice: Always choose a desktop over laptop if possible. Don't buy expensive top of the line gaming laptops if you don't need to (get lower end ones).
